This means that any sexual encounter with someone who is 17 years old or younger is considered nonconsensual and, therefore, illegal.<\/p>\n<p>So what happens when 17 and 18 year old high-school sweethearts have sex with each other? Without a defense allowing for a close-in-age exemption, the 18 year old could be charged with a sex crime like sexual misconduct with a minor, as described in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azleg.gov\/ars\/13\/01405.htm\">A.R.S. 13-1405.<\/a> This would be a felony.<\/p>\n<p>In Arizona, when two individuals under the age of legal consent are charged with sex crimes, they can find a legal defense for their charges under what is colloquially known as the \u201cRomeo and Juliet\u201d law.
