Generally, any Arizona resident at least 18 years old, whether single, married, divorced, or in a same-sex relationship, is able to apply to adopt.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, adult non-residents of Arizona may also apply to adopt if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The child to be adopted is currently under the jurisdiction of the Arizona juvenile court.<\/li>\n<li>The child currently resides in the applicant\u2019s home.<\/li>\n<li>The Department of Child Safety placed the child in the applicant\u2019s home or has recommended adoption by the applicant, and the Foster Care Review Board has reviewed the case.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Children will be placed in an adoptive home \u201cthat best meets the safety, social, emotional, physical, and mental health needs of the child.\u201d This can include factors such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Placing the child in a home with their siblings.<\/li>\n<li>Already established relationships between the child and the potential adopter\u2019s family.<\/li>\n<li>Input from the child him\/herself, if they are 12 years old or older.<\/li>\n<li>Input from the birth parents, except in cases where their parental rights were terminated or severed.<\/li>\n<li>Marital status of the potential adopter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When faced with a decision between a married couple or a single adopter, with all other factors equal in nature, adoption preference will be given to the married couple.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azleg.gov\/viewdocument\/?docName=https:\/\/www.azleg.gov\/ars\/8\/00105.htm\">A.R.S. 8-105<\/a>, prospective adoptive applicants who are not blood relatives of the child must also become <strong><em>certified to adopt<\/em><\/strong>, which involves a home study and the following items regarding the applicant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Financial statement and condition.<\/li>\n<li>Statement of physical and mental health by a physician or nurse practitioner.<\/li>\n<li>Valid fingerprint clearance card.<\/li>\n<li>State and federal criminal background check.<\/li>\n<li>Complete social history.<\/li>\n<li>Moral fitness.<\/li>\n<li>Religious background.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can be <strong><em>disqualified<\/em><\/strong> from adopting in Arizona for failing any of the aforementioned requirements.
