Future inmates should ensure that what they bring is necessary, sturdy, and not flashy. This can range from writing to trade skills.<\/li>\n<li>Earn an education certification, such as a GED or higher education certificate or degree. This can help your post-prison prospects and keep your mind sharp.<\/li>\n<li>Create a reading list in advance of books that are enjoyable, educational, or inspirational and set a reading goal, such as reading one book per month for the duration of your sentence.<\/li>\n<li>Get in the habit of journaling. This can help you stay aware of your mental health and focus or even document your steps to remain on the path to success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Staying busy in positive ways helps to avoid run-ins with prison politics that can get inmates in trouble with correctional staff.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><u>Make Sure Loved Ones Know How to Communicate With You<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Research in advance how friends and family members can send you letters, parcels, and emails, as well as how they can call or visit you.
