Arizona voters passed a landmark proposition that has legalized the recreational consumption and sale of marijuana throughout the state.
Since Arizona passed the legalization of medical marijuana back in 2010, support for adding recreational marijuana grew steadily over time. After a similar measure narrowly failed back in 2016, advocates for Prop 207 knew that victory was a very real possibility. In 2020, Proposition 207 passed with an overwhelming 60% of votes. What does this mean now? Starting on November 30, it is legal for anyone in the state above 21 years of age to possess up to an ounce of marijuana or grow up to 6 plants at home.
Arizona is expecting an explosion of new business and tax income from the legal recreational marijuana industry. With a total expected revenue of $200 to 300 million, the funds would help alleviate stressed state and municipal budgets for law enforcement and education. Along with extra money, Prop 207 will also allow former marijuana convictions related to possession for personal consumption to be expunged through an application process starting on July 12, 2021. Now, if you are awaiting current marijuana charges, you will have until July 12, 2021 to appeal those charges and have them dropped.
