Understanding Arizona’s Center Turn Lane Law
If you’ve driven through Scottsdale, Lake Havasu, or any Arizona city, you’ve seen the center turn lane—the shared, two-way lane marked by solid yellow lines with dashed lines inside. While it might seem like a passing lane or a waiting zone, Arizona law has strict rules for when and how drivers can use it.
Under A.R.S. §28-751(4), the center lane is designated only for making left turns. That means:
- You can use it to turn left onto another street, driveway, or alley.
- You can also enter it from a side street or driveway to merge into traffic safely.
- You cannot use it to pass another vehicle or drive extended distances.
Common Misunderstandings That Lead to Traffic Violations
Many Arizona drivers mistakenly believe they can travel in the center lane for several car lengths before turning. In reality, the law restricts use of the lane to a “safe distance”—just long enough to make a proper turn.
Common mistakes include:
- Driving too far in the lane before turning.
- Using it to merge early during heavy traffic.
- Stopping in the lane for long periods waiting to turn.
- Attempting a U-turn from the center lane (illegal unless posted).
These errors can result in moving violations, fines, or liability in the event of an accident.
What Happens if You’re in a Collision Involving a Center Turn Lane?
Center-lane collisions are common at busy intersections and business corridors like Scottsdale Road or Highway 95 in Lake Havasu. Determining fault can be complicated—especially if multiple vehicles entered the lane simultaneously.
If you’re cited or injured in a crash involving a center lane:
- Do not admit fault at the scene.
- Take photos and note traffic markings and signage.
- Contact an Arizona traffic or criminal defense attorney immediately.
